How do I avoid supporting puppy farms?

A puppy farm (also known as a puppy factory or puppy mill) is an intensive dog breeding facility operating under inadequate conditions. Puppy farms fail to meet dogs’ physical and mental needs, and puppy farming is a major animal welfare issue in Australia. For more information see the Knowledgebase article ‘What is a puppy farm?’.

To avoid supporting puppy farms you should only ever buy a puppy from a reliable source.

AND

3) Never buy a puppy or dog sight unseen

Wherever possible, puppies should be acquired directly from the place where they were born. This minimises stress to the animal and allows prospective owners to see the condition and behaviour of the parents, how the dog has been kept (living conditions), and to learn about their specific needs (including the specific needs of that breed).
