RSPCA Policy F7 Transportation of companion animals

7.1

The RSPCA believes that companion animals must be safely restrained when travelling in/on a vehicle or vessel, as appropriate to the species and individual animal.

7.2

Companion animals must not be left unattended in/on vehicles or vessels during adverse weather conditions, including where they may be at risk from fire, flooding, heat or cold stress.

7.3

Companion animals must be provided with adequate breaks to toilet and exercise, eat, and drink during the journey, according to their physical and mental needs.

7.4

For commercial pet transport journeys, records accompanying animals must clearly state the last time the animal(s) had toilet and exercise breaks, and access to food and water.

7.5

Public transport

7.5.1

The RSPCA supports the adoption of public transport policies which allow companion animals to travel with their owner or caregiver, provided that:

  1. the animal is appropriately restrained or confined at all times
  2. the animal is under control, socialised to other animals and people, and is calm and comfortable
  3. the owner or caregiver clean up after their animal.
