RSPCA Policy D7 Toxicology research and testing

7.1	RSPCA Australia is opposed to the use of animals in the testing of non-essential substances such as cosmetics, tobacco, alcohol and household products.
7.2	RSPCA Australia advocates an independent review of mandatory animal toxicological testing, with the aim to replace the use of animals.
7.3	Where formal toxicology trials involving live animals are required by law: Evidence must be provided that non-animal alternatives have been investigated and an explanation given as to why they cannot be used. Steps must be taken to minimise the number of animals and prevent and alleviate pain and suffering in the animals used. Detailed records on the signs and treatment of toxicosis must be included in mandatory reports and publications.
7.4	RSPCA Australia advocates international collaboration in the field of toxicological testing to avoid the use of animals by developing and implementing the following: suitable non-animal alternatives agreed regulatory chemical safety protocols a shared database containing appropriate information pertaining to toxicological impacts.
